The 17 rare earths and 8 technology metals we cover

Rare earths are the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. Light ones (lanthanum to europium) are mined in bulk; heavy ones (gadolinium to lutetium, plus yttrium) are scarcer and cost far more. A green dot marks the metals with a current price.

What is a given amount of metal worth?

Pick a metal and an amount in grams, kilograms, troy ounces, pounds or tonnes. The value uses the reference price from 27 October 2026.

Example: 100 grams of gallium at $2,866.37 per kg is worth $286.64.

Value $286.64 100 grams of Gallium at $2,866.37 per kg

Indicative only. A dealer's buy and sell prices differ from the reference price, and small lots often carry a premium.

07 · Where the prices come from

How we price, in four rules

Price last changed
Last checked
Currency and unit
USD per kg, metal
  1. 1

    One named series

Every figure is the private-investor reference price from our metals supplier, in US dollars per kilogram of metal. We do not mix it with oxide or Chinese domestic prices.

  2. 2

    Checked every week

The supplier reviews prices weekly. Outside big market events they often stay the same for weeks or months, so the date on the page is the date the price last changed.

  3. 3

    Same number everywhere

The figure in a page title, its first sentence, its table and this homepage come from one data file, so they cannot disagree.

  4. 4

    Not a quote

A reference price is a guide to the market for physical metal. What a dealer pays or charges you depends on purity, form, lot size and timing.

09 · Questions

Questions about rare earth and strategic metal prices

Short answers, using the figures in the table above.

What is the price of dysprosium today?

The dysprosium price is $2,166.15 per kilogram of metal as of 27 October 2026. That is +377.23% since 1 January and +527.43% since January 2020, the largest rise this year of the 12 metals we track.

Which strategic metal is the most expensive per kilogram?

Germanium is the most expensive metal in our table at $10,196.74 per kilogram, followed by hafnium at $9,609.37 and rhenium at $7,400.88. Terbium, at $4,593.75, is the most expensive rare earth.

Why do dysprosium and terbium cost so much more than neodymium?

Dysprosium and terbium are heavy rare earths, found in far smaller amounts than neodymium and refined mostly in China. A magnet needs only a few percent of them, but there is no easy substitute when the magnet must work hot. Both have needed a Chinese export licence since 4 April 2025. Today a kilogram of dysprosium costs about 12 times a kilogram of neodymium.

Are these market benchmark prices?

No. They are reference prices for private investors buying physical metal, in US dollars per kilogram, from one supplier series. Industrial benchmarks for oxides traded in China are usually far lower and move on different days, so the two should not be mixed.

How often are the prices updated?

The supplier reviews prices every week. Outside major market events they often stay unchanged for weeks or months, so each page shows the date the price last changed rather than today's date.

Is China's ban on gallium and germanium exports to the US still in force?

The US-only ban is suspended until 27 November 2026. Exports of gallium, germanium and antimony to every country, the US included, still need a Chinese export licence.
